Today was the day to see the city of Vienna, because I was only staying there for two nights. So just like in Paris, I walked and walked. Found a very nice park and lay my head down to sleep over there as I was tired.
I came upon a huge building that looked like some massive cathedral, but was in fact the city hall. I did not know this at the time, so I walked into the first unlocked door I found, hoping to see the inside of this magnificent facade. I walked into a big room and later a courtyard where preparations for a fashion runway show were taking place. I walked around the building, and no one bothered me so I figured it's OK. I stumbled upon a huge hall where caterers were busy preparing tables for some kind of dinner.
The city is pretty big so it is difficult to walk around too many side streets when you are making your way somewhere. I saw the city center, the cathedral, and the really funky Hundertwasser House. Then I made it back to the hostel to meet up with some people. This weekend Vienna is having a HUGE free outdoor music festival. A bunch off us made plans to meet up at the hostel and then go to the festival. Supposedly over two million people were supposed to show up for this shindig.
In German, the word Vienna is Wien. So everywhere you go you see "Wiener Bus", "Wiener Taxi" and so on. This city is full of Wieners.
We got to the festival and it was indeed huge. Lots of people, food and beer tents, stages, and music. Almost seemed like a Nurnberg youth labor rights demonstration, but without the yellow T-shirts. We walked around and tried to absorb as much off this place as we could. All different kinds of music were being played on the various stages. There was even a country western stage with a band playing and singing immaculate country, only to break off into German between the songs.
We got back before the subway closed and went to hang out at a bar near the hostel.
