World Trip

Coming to Geneva

June 13, 2005

Getting up was a little tough this morning because of how little sleep I got. I had to be at the train station by ten so I was first to leave. I said bye to the girls, made plans to meet up in Budapest, and headed off.

I spent most of the day on the train. I spent a bunch of time writing in the journal, sleeping a bit, and watching the world fly by from the restaurant car.

At some point I started talking with this French girl named Sarah. She was quite a character. She bought me a coffee and we chatted for a while. She does not like chocolate, but loves chocolate ice cream, and had a ridiculous nicotine addiction. I would have loved to hang out with he longer, but she was catching another train from the stop right before Geneva.

I got to Geneva and got info on the hostels. Situation did not look good. There are only two hostels in Geneva, one independent and the other Hosteling International. Both were fully booked. The independent one was so fully booked they did not even man the reception. So I went to the other one and after standing in line for a good half an hour found out it was really booked as well, with no walking spots free. So I asked if I could camp in the back, but was denied. I called a camping ground and they actually had room, so that was my fallback plan. However, they told me to wait until 7 pm because that is until when reservations are honored.

I sat around and tried to charge my laptop, but their outlets are funny. They accept the two prongs that most of Europe takes as well, but their grounding pin is placed in a funny place and the plug shape has a strange hexagonal shape. I had to widdle my plug adapted down to fit.

Luckily I was able to get a bed, and headed off to do laundry. There I met a girl from Newfoundland who is currently doing an internship working with some UN NGO's. She has lived and studied Russian in St. Petersburg for six months, so we had lots of great stories to exchange. I tried to convince her to get me into a private tour of the UN building, but there was nothing she could do.

I am now finishing up the day relaxing in the hostel writing this journal and getting ready for a full day of seeing Geneva tomorrow.
